چکیده

The present study was performed to evaluate antioxidant potential of Senecio amplexicaulis Kunth. extracts. The air dried powdered plant material was extracted with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and methanol and concentrated using rotary evaporator. The extracts were evaluated for total phenolic content presence, total antioxidant capacity, reducing power, ability to scavenge various free radicals and ferrous ion chelation. Phytochemical investigation indicated the presence of significant amount of phenolic contents in the polar extracts of S. amplexicaulis. The phenolic content was maximum in ethyl acetate extract and lowest in the petroleum ether extract. The polar extracts were further evaluated for antioxidant potential. Ethyl acetate extract demonstrated higher total antioxidant capacity than methanolic extract. The polar extracts (100-600μg/ml) exhibited fair reducing power as indicated by high absorbance values in the reducing power assay. The polar extracts exhibited moderate free radical scavenging and ferrous ion chelating activities. The antioxidant potential of extracts was low when compared to standard antioxidants like ascorbic acid and rutin. However, since the extracts are crude and the activity can be result of synergism or antagonism of the phytoconstituents present, the results are encouraging and points to a need for phytochemical analysis of the extracts.

Anti-Inflammatory Activity and Composition of Senecio salignus Kunth

We investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of Senecio salignus. This medicinal plant is often used in Mexico for the treatment of fever and rheumatism. Chloroform and methanol extracts of the plant were tested on 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate- (TPA-) induced edema in mice ears. The methanol extract of the plant inhibited edema by 36 ± 4.4% compared with the control, while the chlorof...

Studies on the potential antioxidant properties of Senecio stabianus Lacaita (Asteraceae) and its inhibitory activity against carbohydrate-hydrolysing enzymes.

This study showed for the first time the antioxidant and hypoglycaemic properties of the methanol, n-hexane and ethyl acetate extracts from Senecio stabianus Lacaita, a plant that belongs to the Asteraceae family. The antioxidant activities were carried out using two different in vitro assays, namely 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) test and 2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate)...

Comparative Antihyperglycemic Effect of Petroleum Ether, Acetone, Ethanol and Aqueous Extracts of Cleome rutidosperma DC and Senecio biafrae (Oliv. and Hiern) in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Mice

The present study aimed to investigate the acute antihyperglycemic effects of four different solvent extracts (Petroleum ether, acetone, absolute ethanol and water) of two plants: Cleome rutidosperma (leaves) and Senecio biafrae (root) in STZ-induced diabetic mice and their in vitro antioxidant activities as well as their phytoconstituents. A single administration of the extracts at a dose of 5...

Antioxidant activity and phenol content of extracts of bark, stems, and young and mature leaves from Blepharocalyx salicifolius (Kunth) O. Berg.

Phenolic compounds are a group of plant secondary metabolites known to have a variety of bioactivities, including the ability to function as antioxidants. Because of the side effects of the use of synthetic substances, the search for natural and less toxic compounds has increased significantly. This study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant activity and phenol content of hexane, ethyl acet...

A tocotrienol series with an oxidative terminal prenyl unit from Garcinia amplexicaulis.

Ten tocotrienol derivatives, i.e., amplexichromanols (1-10), were isolated from stem bark of Garcinia amplexicaulis Vieill. ex Pierre collected in Caledonia. The structures of the compounds 1-5 were determined to be chromanol derivatives substituted by a polyprenyl chain oxidized in terminal position. The remaining compounds 6-10 are the corresponding dimeric derivatives. Eleven known compounds...
